Legislation relating to employment exists to regulate the relationship between businesses and their employees. It is there to protect not only the employee but also the employer. It allows both parties to regulate their working conditions and sustain a balanced working relationship. It allows the employee to work in a setting that has a pay structure, health and safety regulations and holiday entitlements. It also allows people of all backgrounds the right to work without discrimination. It provides a framework for all businesses, regardless of the industry they are in.
When you need information and advice with regards to employment responsibilities and rights, these can be found within your contract that was provided by your employer at the start of your employment. Information can also be found within your staff handbook. In my setting, we have a lever arch folder which has all our policies printed out so are accessible for us at all times. These can also be found on our website. For information on rights whilst in employment, the Health and Safety Executive will have detailed information on health and safety at work. Information can be found at Acas (Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service) which provides free and impartial information and advice to employers and employees on all aspects of workplace relations and employment law. Another source of information is at Gov.uk which includes information about Access to Work, holiday entitlement, redundancies, National Minimum Wage and your rights at work. Additional learning support is also available to learners with disabilities and learning difficulties and is available through schools and colleges. A further source of advice and information is available from the Citizens Advice. They aim to provide the advice people need for the problems they face and improve the policies and practices that affect people’s lives. They provide free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone on their rights and responsibilities. They value diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination. Information and advice is also available from trade unions which are groups of employees who join together to maintain and improve their conditions of employment.
