Hair loss in Women from Medication

Medication which Causes hair loss is a problem that should not be over looked: however, doctors should counsel women ahead of time explaining the side effect and collaborate on the options for treatment if hair loss occurs.
It is normal to lose 50 to 100 strands each day as we comb and style our hair. But if you notice excessive hair loss that is causing bald areas, medications prescribe by your doctors can be to blame for your hair loss by interfering with the normal cycle of hair growth. Hair growth cycle consist of three stages the anagen phase, catagen phase, and telogen phase. Hair follicles that are responsible for hair growth also, can become damaged by two types medications that can lead to hair loss: Telogen effluvium is the most generic form of medication-induced hair loss. This condition causes the hair follicles to go into their resting phase (telogen) and fall out too early. The other type of hair loss is Anagen effluvium is hair loss during the anagen phase of the hair cycle. It is most common when patients are treated with chemotherapy medications, making them loss all their hair on their head and all over their body. Furthermore, many different types of medication can cause hair loss, including Anticoagulants a medicine to treat heart disease , gout medicine to treat arthritis, beta blockers to help lower blood pressure, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors is another type of blood pressure medication, taking too much vitamin A, female hormones that can cause hormonal change, antidepressants to treat depression and anxiety and anticonvulsants that treats patients that have seizures are all medications that causes hair loss. These types of medication only make hair loss temporary meaning the hair will eventually grow back. Talking with your doctor about your hair loss can help him determine to lower your dosage or prescribe a different type of medication or recommend a hair treatment that can help diminish your hair loss.
Medications that causes hair loss can affect women self-esteem and doctors that prescribe medications that can cause hair loss should inform their patients by asking simple questions including:
1. When did the hair loss start?
2. How quickly has the hair been shedding?
3. What other symptoms do you have (scalp itching, burning or tingling)?
4. What medications were you taking in the four months leading up to the hair loss?
5. What other illness do you have?
6. Have you made any changes to your diet or hair-care routine?

The doctor also examine your scalp to look at pattern of hair loss by performing different type of test to determine what is causing your hair loss but also, ask the patient to stop using the medication for a while to see if hair loss end.
